But if by definition of normal you mean a person who has a jaundiced view of life and prefers his or her music to be at least mildly challenging—if not downright annoying Mr. Pharmacist - The Fall - 458489 A Sides its insistence upon being heard as foreground noise rather than background buzz and hum—there are plenty of Fall records that are must-owns.

The Fall recipe of songwriting is simple. First, hand village crank Mark E. Smith a microphone. Oh, yes. First, hand a microphone to the irritable Mr. Smith, who is both a true individualist and misanthropist. And second, let him spew great gouts of indecipherable poetry and hurl strange incantations over one form of droning caterwaul or another. This homemade recipe has been working since the late s, and continues to work to this very day.

Because Mark E. Smith is holding a grudge, and that grudge is against society. Or life. Or whatever. That said, during the era of Brix Smith—Mark Electrolux - Various - 2 Years Rumpfunk Netlabel. Which is not to say that the songs on A-Sides make for easy listening. And it freaks me out. So forget what Christgau said.

  1. The seventeen songs collected here come from The Fall’s Brix Smith era, aka “the golden era of Fall releases.” This is a perfect introduction to the band, and as legendary critic Robert Christgau said, it’s “The only Fall record any normal person need own”.
  2. Y'know, Mark, Brix wasn't so bad. This 'popular' version of the Fall was still interesting in its popish, Fallish way. It's got that late Eighties digital reverb sheen to it, but MES's anti-vocals nicely defeat that. And it's got the signature Fall insistent beats, the Kinks, and rockabilly! What more do you want?/5(2).

  4. Mar 22,  · And Smith also demonstrates a crisper sound on the punchy “Hit the North Part 1.” And while Fall’s cover of The Other Half’s immortal “Mr. Pharmacist” verves towards garage rock, it’s still likeably straightforward. Which is not to say that the songs on A-Sides make for easy listening. “Wrong Place, Right Time No. 2” is.
  5. The Fall‘s compilation, A-sides, is being reissued on vinyl – for the first time in the USA – and to add to the desirability, this will be a WHITE vinyl pressing. The track album was issued on cassette and CD stateside but it appears only the UK and Germany were treated to.
  6. Bypassing their edgy, early singles and concentrating on their artier, more eclectic work of the mid- and late '80s, A-Sides encapsulates nearly all of the Fall's many attributes. All of the singles on A-Sides are culled from the era when Brix Smith was in the band, arguably the band's most cohesive and rewarding years.
